On Thursday, January 9, 2025, a guest lecture was given by Masato Kondo, a curator at the Nagoya City Art Museum, at the Umeda Seminar on Japanese Culture (Classical Literature), taught by Kei Umeda Senior Assistant Professor Faculty of Liberal Arts Department of Japanese Cultures Culture, Faculty of Letters, Teikyo University. The Umeda Seminar focuses on research into classical literature, classical books, and artworks, and this time Kondo spoke about the work of curators in Nagoya City from the perspective of a practitioner.
Kondo, who has served as a curator at Nagoya Castle and Nagoya City Art Museum, spoke about the role of a curator at the Nagoya City Art Museum, which has a large collection of modern and contemporary art from Japan and abroad, mainly from Paris, Mexico, and the Chukyo region, and explained that in addition to traditional duties such as preservation, collection, exhibition, and research, in recent years, following the revision of the Museum Law, they are being asked to take on the role of taking on the role of supporting cultural tourism in the region. He also introduced the latest research results regarding the research work required for exhibitions and new cultural resources, explaining that intellectual and steady work is necessary to put on an exhibition, and that both high expertise and broad insight aimed at general art fans are necessary.
In recent years, Nagoya City Art Museum has been undertaking a variety of initiatives, such as collaborating with video games and unearthing the Chukyo art scene. The students who took the course listened to the lecture with serious expressions on their faces and were surprised at the importance of the job of a curator.
