On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Shun Obara (6th year School of Medicine) under the guidance of Professor Yasuhiro Otaki Teikyo University General Medical Education and Research Center, compared the patient safety awareness of medical students at the time of enrollment with that of students of the same age group, and revealed that medical students have a high level of interest in many aspects of medicine, including patient safety, from the time of enrollment.
Additionally, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Kentaro Miura (6th year, School of Medicine) conducted a similar study under similar guidance to compare the patient safety awareness of medical students and pharmacy students upon enrollment and revealed that medical students have a strong sense of ownership over ensuring patient safety from the time of enrollment.
Generally speaking, patient safety awareness refers to the attitude and mindset of medical professionals who prioritize patient safety and take the initiative to improve the quality of medical care. Previous studies have also pointed out that medical students have a high level of patient safety awareness, but this study revealed that medical students' patient safety awareness is already higher at the time of enrollment than those of the same age group and pharmacy students. Another previous study pointed out that medical students tend to lose motivation to learn as they progress through the grades, and the results of this study suggest the importance of providing systematic patient safety education from the early years, when patient safety awareness is high. It is expected that these research results will provide important suggestions for establishing patient safety education before graduation in School of Medicine.
Obara's research results were published in the academic journal "Healthcare," and Miura's research results were published in the academic journal "Advances in Medical Education and Practice." We look forward to seeing even greater success from these two.
